Derek Jeter Retires

Let me start by saying that I despise the New York Yankees. On principle, I loathe teams that try to buy (or succeed at buying) championships.

That said, Derek Jeter is one of the few recent Yankees whom I respect, primarily for the way he approached the game of baseball and the fact that he has played his ENTIRE career with one team. I’m kinda “old school” like that.

Anyway, I’ve heard on the radio people talking about where Jeter ranks all-time as a Yankee. That got me to thinking about that, as well as where he ranks all-time among shortstops. So here are my thoughts…

As far as shortstops go, I’d put Jeter somewhere between 3rd and 5th. He’s clearly NOT better than Honus Wagner and Cal Ripken. But he’s in the same tier as the next level guys like Robin Yount and Ozzie Smith.

Now when you think about all-time Yankees, the discussion gets a little more interesting. Clearly, he is no where close to the top 5 players. He isn’t even in the same discussion as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, and Yogi Berra. Let’s get that out of the way at the get go.

From there, to make it easier, I’ll only consider offensive players. Trying to compare hitters and pitchers for best all-time is like comparing apples and oranges.

So where does that leave Jeter? After the big 5, you’ve got guys like Don Mattingly, Bernie Williams, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter. I personally would put him ahead of all of those guys, which means he comes in at 6th best offensive Yankee of all-time in my opinion, which considering the top 5, is pretty impressive.

So what do you think? Where would you put Jeter all-time?
